Chapter Four

She thought they would have that night to fall into each other’s arms and she could learn the secrets of his body as he had done to her. After dinner it wasn’t even a question if she would be going back to his cabin. They had steaks off the grill, and she ate her dinner hungrily because after a day of running in the wild, she found she liked meat more now that she had a predator as part of herself. But as night closed over the campground like a dark cloak with a caressing breeze, even as they walked to the cabin holding hands, Aisha could feel his body tense, and he lifted his head to scent the air. She was going to ask what’s wrong but decided to use her own instinct instead. She smelled them, more than one. Nervousness and fear made their sweat tart in the air.

“Shit, they found us too damn quick. Be casual,” Zander commanded. “They don’t know we have sensed them, not yet anyway.”

“How will we escape?” Aisha asked. She knew she shouldn’t be scared with Zander there to protect her. But the thought of being caged or worse still caused dread to clutch at her throat and she missed a step.

“They won’t come in, not yet. They are still outside the censors,” Zander explained. “They will wait until they think we’re asleep and unaware. I doubt they were told exactly who they are going after. Mission details are more than likely to neutralize target if unable to capture alive.”

“We can shift and run,” Aisha said as they stepped in the house.

“Or we can do what predators are made for and fight for our lives.” He looked at her, and she swore his eyes glinted like that of the big cat.

She felt the urge to hunt rise. “We can do that?”

“We can hurt them. We don’t have to kill unless totally necessary, a kill or be killed situation.” Zander made it clear with a grin. “Let’s try to keep one talking when we do.”

Aisha nodded. “What do we do until then?”

“I’ll contact home base, let them know we’re moving to the secondary location. Then we wait.”

Zander sat on the floor and pulled the case that held his backpack from its secure hiding place. “Come here, sit by me,” he commanded. “If anything happens to me before this is through, you use these codes to reach the others.”

She watched him key in a series of numbers and memorized them in the sequence he used. The screen flickered, and in moment a face that was identical to Zander’s came on the screen. She could see they were brothers, but when she looked at Zander she could also see their differences. While his brother had a happy light to his eyes, Zander’s seemed wary, troubled even when he smiled. It’s because he hasn’t forgiven himself. She knew this with all certainty. A mate always knows.

“Where’s Casey?” Zander asked.

“Nia is breaking his hand in the delivery room.
